Giant Kenyan Telco Safaricom has rolled out new mobile number prefixes.
The dominant telecommunication firm has announced that it will be distributing the numbers with the new prefixes 0110 and 0111 free of charge but that one will only be required to activate the line with a top up airtime of sh 50.
There move could be a cold counter-reactive measure against its market competitors Airtel and Telkom who have been issuing free SIM cards to their clients.
Safaricom further promised they will be allowing customers to choose their own numbers of choice and not the traditional pre-assigned mobile phone numbers. What it means is one will be asked to choose the number he or she wants attached to the new prefixe.
Communication Authority of Kenya CAK assigned the telco these preface digits last year after the common 07xxx prefix had been exhausted.
Recently, Safaricom through its CEO Michael Joseph also announced that it will be launching a 5G network in Kenya what will make it the first in East Africa.
Safaricom is placed first with approximately 63.5 percent of the Kenyan mobile phone market by June 30th 2019 alongside a subscription rate of 31.8 million.
