Buying and putting on a Mutumba clothes is a normal practice but unfortunately this has medically been proved to be dangerous.

Dr. Kunle Adenasina who is a medical Doctor at Nissi Hospital in Nasaraw State, during an interview last Sunday, warned those who like buying Mutumba clothes to be cautious due to its health implications.

There is a skin infections attached to the fairly used clothes, for instance Candidiasis, infections like Fungus, Skin diseases, Furunculosis and allergic skin infections among many others can attack any careless person.

The doctor observed that the Candidiasis disease is a fungal infection which is notorious and cannot easily be treated even after washing the cloth. He mentioned that though the Mutumba can be cheap; its health implications remain very risky.

The following are some of the precautions he advises those using them-

First disinfect any mutumba cloth in warm water mixed with antiseptic of your choice before sun drying and finally ironing it.

“Others will buy because of the perceived nice odor; they will just bath and wear it immediately not knowing the health implications.

“Also, wearing of fairly used bra or pants is risky, one can be infected with fungus skin or bacterial infection,” the doctor said.

The medic further noted how it was even quite dangerous for those women lazy at washing these kind of clothes before putting them on.

His sentiments were echoed by Mrs Mary Stephen who is a community worker with a Primary Health Care Center saying, “Some women do come to the hospital with complains of itching in the virginal or rashes at the breast region.”
